Creating your web page
How to create a page in your group's folder, for new users.
Once you receive notice from an administrator that your group's space is ready, you can start creating pages.
First, you'll need to find your organization's folder. Most new groups will be in the Organizations area of the site (you can request placement elsewhere if you prefer), so click on that menu option in the left-hand column after logging in.
You'll notice two tabs over the main text area. Click on Contents to see all the folders in this section. Find your organization's folder in the list and click on it to open it.
Now, it's time to put in some content. You'll notice three menu options to the right of the contents and view tabs: actions, add to folder and state. Click on add to folder, and you'll be presented with a list of the different types of content you can create. We'll start with the most important: your home page
.
Choose page from the drop-down list, and you'll be presented with a blank form to create your page's attributes. At the top is Short Name. This name will become part of the web address for the page, so name it something short and descriptive, without spaces. If the page will cover your group's annual Fun Run, for example, you might give it the short name funrun.
There's one exception to this rule. If this page will be the home page of your group's site, and the first page that visitors should see, give it the short name index_html. This tells CACVoices that this page will be the index to the rest of your pages, and that you want visitors to come here first. For obvious reasons, only one page in each folder can be named index_html.
The Title field has fewer restrictions than Short Name. You can include capital letters, spaces, and some punctuation. For our example page, you might choose the title Annual Fun Run - 2007. This will be the title that visitors see at the top of your page.
For the Description field, give a short summary of what's on the page. This summary will appear at the top of the page, in the contents listing of your folder, and when your page comes up as a result of a search. Make it short and snappy - about 20 words is fine.
Now you're ready to enter text in the body of your page. You can type directly or copy and paste from another document (be aware that your formatting may change). There are several editing tools available to help you. In addition to text, you can upload images and create links to other pages on CACVoices or to other websites.
When you're done, choose whether you want to allow discussion about this page (the default is to not allow comments). Then click the save button at the bottom to record your changes.
